A vehicle was travelling westbound on Neil Street towards the four way stop
intersection at Foul Bay Road. The driver intended to continue westbound and cross
Foul Bay Road, however the driver failed to notice a cyclist riding her 12 speed
bicycle southbound on Foul Bay Road. The cyclist was wearing her bicycle helmet
with a flashing white headlight in addition to a rear red tail light. The vehicle struck the
cyclist in the intersection. The cyclist sustained minor injuries that resulted in a
swollen finger and abrasions to her legs. The driver was issued a violation ticket for
Fail to Yield After Stop, Section 175 (1) of the Motor Vehicle Act. The prescribed fine
amount is $167.00.
Nov 15th – OB File #12-4360
A cyclist was riding his bicycle southbound in the 3000 block of Henderson Road and
rode into an unoccupied vehicle (legally parked). The impact of the accident broke the bicycle frame and caused the cyclist to dismount from his bicycle and his head went through the back window of the car. The cyclist suffered severe facial lacerations which required between 20-25 stitches.
Due to the number of bike thefts this past week, please ensure you do the following:
- Keep your bike in a visible, well-lit high-traffic area.
- Use secure parking facilities (bike shelters or indoor bike parking facilities).
- Lock both wheels and the frame to the rack.
- Secure your bike’s components or remove them; consider using regular bolts instead of quick releases (wheels that use a mechanism to allow the wheels to be removed quickly and without any tools).
- Choose a strong lock and combine two different types of locks.
