Weekly News Briefs June 16-23, 2013

Sometime overnight on June 15th/16th, unknown person(s) attended in the 1400 Block of Beach Drive, in Oak Bay, and removed two children’s scooters from a residential garage. Police are reminding residents to keep garage doors locked and valuables secured as well as considering motion-activated security lights on their properties.

The Oak Bay Police would like to again remind residents that firearms and ammunition can be relinquished to the Oak Bay Police Department, during the current Gun Amnesty Program, until June 30th, 2013. If you have a firearm that you would like to relinquish please contact the police at 592-2424 and we will make arrangements to attend your residence to retrieve the firearm or ammunition.

Numerous concerned citizens have contacted the Oak Bay Police during the week of June 16th-June 23rd, 2013, to report distracted drivers utilizing electronic devices while driving. The Oak Bay Police take such infractions and the risk that they pose to both offending drivers and the public very seriously. Drivers utilizing electronic devices while driving risk $167 fines, and should be mindful that their actions can be, and are, being observed and reported by the public at large.

On June 22nd, 2013, between 1:30 and 2:00 pm, a red Toyota pickup truck, BCL EM4198, was stolen from Cedar Hill X Rd east of Henderson Rd., Oak Bay. The vehicle was recovered the following day in Saanich.

On June 22nd, 2013, at 9:45 pm, a luxury sports car was observed by the Oak Bay Police Department speeding in the 2400 block of Cedar Hill Cross Road, in Oak Bay, travelling at 113 km/hr., in a posted 50 km/hr. posted zone. The driver received $673 in fines, and the vehicle was impounded, with associated towing and storage costs in excess of $200.
