Cougar Sighting in Oak Bay – January 7, 2025

A cougar was observed by Oak Bay Police at 7:15pm on Jan.7/25.

Oak Bay Police are advising residents of this recent cougar sighting in Cadboro Bay, on the ocean side of the 3500 block of Beach Drive. This area is very close to the Oak Bay Yacht Club and Cadboro-Gyro Park. BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified. Police are advising caution to residents and park users in this area.

Safety Precautions:

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Keep a close eye on children and pets, especially during dawn and dusk.
  • Avoid hiking or jogging alone: Travel in groups whenever possible.
  • Make noise: Clap your hands, shout, or use a bear bell to deter cougars.
  • Do not approach a cougar: If you see a cougar, maintain a safe distance and back away slowly. Never run.
  • Secure attractants: Store garbage securely, keep pet food indoors, and clean up any fallen fruit from trees.
