On the 11th of February 2025 at 9:25 AM, Oak Bay Police were requested by Oak Bay Fire to assist with a fire in the girl’s bathroom of Oak Bay High School. The small fire had been lit in the lower-level Southeast girl’s bathroom. Staff at the high school quickly extinguished the blaze.
The school had been temporarily evacuated after the fire was discovered due to reports of the smell of smoke in a second-floor classroom. It was determined to be smoke smell circulating through the ventilation system. Classes resumed when it was determined no further safety concerns existed. There were no injuries reported.
Saanich Police Forensic Investigation Services attended the scene and Oak Bay Police Department conducted the arson investigation. There have been no arrests related to this incident.
Days earlier on February 7, 2025, Oak Bay Police investigated another arson, this time in the boy’s washroom at Oak Bay High School. That fire was quickly contained; however, the school was closed and all students sent home for the day (File 25-320).
These incidents have not been linked; however, it is possible both arson incidents are related.
The Oak Bay Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding these arsons to report to the non-emergency line at 250-592-2424 or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS)
