Police Calls from February 4th – 12th, 2013:
On February 4th, two apartment buildings in the 1100 block of Beach Drive and one in the 1300 block of Beach Drive reported their mailrooms had been broken into sometime during the weekend. Canada Post is assisting with the investigation. A similar break-in investigated by Saanich PD had video of two male suspects. A fourth building in the 1400 Block of Beach Drive reported damage to the front door lock. Investigation confirmed an attempt had been made to defeat the lock, unsuccessfully.
On February 5th, police investigated a hit and run that occurred between 1:00 P.M. and 1:30 P.M. at the Oak Bay Marina parking lot while the complainant’s green pick-up truck was parked there. Investigation showed the suspect vehicle was white in colour.
On February 6th, police investigated a report of attempt theft from vehicle in the 2600 block of Cadboro Bay Road. Sometime overnight, someone gained entry to the vehicle, but nothing was taken.
On February 6th, police investigated a report of mischief in the 2000 block of Meadow Place. Sometime overnight, the complainant’s house was egged.
On February 6th, police attended the intersection of Foul Bay Road and Neil Street to investigate a two vehicle collision. A vehicle travelling southbound on Foul Bay Road had to stop suddenly for a pedestrian. The vehicle following did not stop in time and collided with the rear of the first vehicle, resulting in damage over $1000. There were no injuries, though one vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Charges are not anticipated.
On February 6th, police attended the back yard of a residence in the 2300 block of Foul Bay Road for a report of suspicious people. One under-age male was found in possession of liquor. He was ticketed and parents notified. Two other under-age males were later found in possession of a narcotic. They were taken into custody and released to their parents.
On February 7th, police received a complaint of drivers stopping on crosswalks to pick up children in the 800 block of Hampshire (Pathway to Monterey Ave and Monterey Middle School). Parents and those dropping off and picking up students are reminded to keep the safety of everyone’s children in mind. It is an offence to stop on a crosswalk (Section 189 (1)(e) Motor Vehicle Act.)
On February 8th, police were called to the 1400 block of Beach Drive to assist BC Ambulance in gaining access to an elderly female who had fallen in her apartment. Access was gained and the female was transported to hospital for medical attention.
On February 8th, police received a report of Fraud in the 1700 block of Beach Drive. The complainant advised they received a phone call where the caller told them their computer was infected with a virus and for a fee it would be fixed. The complainant provided their credit card number for payment. When unexpected charges appeared on their monthly statement, it was reported to the bank and credit card company. The charges have been reimbursed, but the investigation continues. People are reminded to be very cautious when providing their credit card number over the phone and to report all suspicious activity to your bank and credit card company.
On February 8th, at approximately 8:30 P.M. police observed a male cyclist weaving dangerously in the westbound lane of Oak Bay Avenue near Wilmot Avenue. The male was found to be intoxicated and was lodged in cells until sober.
On February 9th, at approximately 1:10 A.M., police were conducting a Checkstop on McNeill Avenue at Foul Bay Road. The driver of one vehicle had the odour of liquor on his breath and advised he had been drinking. The 41 year old male provided a breath sample on the approved screening device and registered a WARN reading. A second test at the request of the driver on a different ASD also registered a WARN reading. The driver’s licence was seized and he was given a three day driving prohibition.
On February 9th at approximately 11:13 P.M., police received a complaint that a dog bit a jogger on Beach Drive at Transit Road.  The complainant received a puncture wound to his leg and a bruise. The investigation has been turned over to Victoria Animal Control. People are reminded to keep control of their dogs, particularly around pedestrians.
On February 10th, at approximately 9:30 A.M. police responded to a report of theft from vehicle in the 2500 block of Florence Street. Sometime overnight, someone pried open the door lock of the vehicle parked in the carport and stole a TomTom GPS unit valued at $200.00. Damage to the vehicle lock was valued at over $100.00.
On February 10th at approximately 8:05 P.M. police were called to the parking lot of the Oak Bay Rec Centre at 1975 Bee Street for a person prowling vehicles.  The complainant observed a male looking into parked vehicles. When the male realized he was being observed, he left the parking lot. No vehicles were found to have been broken into.
Oak Bay Police will be increasing the number of foot and bike patrols throughout 2013 to maintain high visibility and discourage criminal activity.
