Excessive Speed
On September 4, 2024, at 12:04 am, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave. The posted speed limit is 40km/h. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound on Beach Dr and heard the engine revving loudly. Radar readings indicated that vehicle was travelling 91km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as an 18-year-old male. The teen was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and his GMC Canyon was impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-2382)
No Insurance / Electronic Device
On September 4, 2024, at 2:06 pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting enforcement on Oak Bay Ave near Foul Bay Rd. Police observed a male driver using an electronic device while driving a Tesla. The male was observed sending and receiving text messages while holding the phone in his hand. Police directed the male to pull over. The driver was identified as a 38-year-old man. Police also discovered the Tesla’s insurance had expired in June 2023. The man was issued Violation Tickets for Using an Electronic Device S. 214.2(1) MVA $368 and No Insurance S. 24(3)(b) MVA $598. The man was able to renew his insurance over the phone during the traffic stop. (OB File 24-2391)
Obstruct Police / Immigration Act / Prohibited Driver / Electronic Device
On September 5, 2024, at 2:52 pm, an Oak Bay Police officer was exiting the police station parking lot when he observed a male driving while holding a black smartphone in his left hand by the driver’s window. The man was driving a cube van and delivering packages. Police conducted a traffic stop and the male provided a false name. The male was arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer. Police were able to confirm the 36-year-old man’s identity. Police learned that the male was a prohibited driver in British Columbia, his work visa had expired 2 years ago, and he was inadmissible in Canada. The man was re-arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer, Driving While Prohibited, and under Section 55 of the Immigration Act. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Using an Electronic Device S. 214.2(1) MVA $368, and his work vehicle was impounded for 7 days for driving while prohibited. The man was transported to the Saanich Police Department cells, where the Canadian Border Services Agency took over the investigation with respect to the man’s Visa status. Police will be recommending charges of Obstruct a Police Officer S. 129 CC and Drive While Prohibited S. 95 MVA. (OB File 24-2409)
Fraud
On September 7, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a fraud. The complainant advised that his computer was hacked, and he was instructed to contact Microsoft. He contacted “Microsoft”, and he was transferred to a bank fraud department. The complainant gave the bank access to his computer. The following day the complainant noticed that $5500 was missing from his bank account. The complainant realized he had been scammed and contacted police. The complainant hoped by reporting this to police he might prevent others from being scammed. (OB File 24-2430)
