On November 26, 2024, at approximately 12:43 AM, police were dispatched to a report of a male in the water near Oak Bay Marina. The individual was found clinging to his sailboat.
The incident was reported by a nearby resident who heard someone yelling from the water. The Coast Guard was notified.
Upon arrival, police officers found the individual still yelling for help. One officer made verbal contact to reassure him, while another activated sirens to alert any nearby live-aboard residents who might assist while waiting for the Coast Guard rescue boat.
Another officer met with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) team. As preparations were underway to launch, a live-aboard occupant took a small dinghy to assist the individual. The officer joined the RCMSAR crew and directed them to the individual’s location.
The RCMSAR team reached the individual, who was still clinging to his sailboat. He was transported to meet with BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) personnel who treated and transported him to Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) for further evaluation. His condition was not considered life threatening.
An officer later visited RJH to gather more information. The individual explained that he attempted to return to his sailboat from shore. Without a tender, he constructed a makeshift raft from branches to float to his boat but was unable to climb aboard due to the cold. He expressed his gratitude to the police and everyone who assisted in his rescue.
Deputy Chief Kris Rice commented on the incident, saying, “We commend the excellent response from the RCMSAR, Coast Guard, EHS, and Oak Bay Fire Department. Their coordinated efforts ensured a swift and effective rescue. This incident highlights the importance of water safety and the need for proper equipment when venturing out on the water.”
