Media Release May 11th – May 17th, 2020

On May 11th, the Oak Bay Police received a report regarding a package that was stolen from their porch. The homeowner left the package for UPS to pick up and noted it was stolen.

On May 12th, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a Google Play Card fraud. The complainant had been defrauded of $800.00 from the scam. The complainant started a new job and received an email from her new boss requesting that she purchase the GOOGLE gift cards for a client. The employee confirmed later that their supervisor did not send the email and it was a scam.

The Google Play Gift Card Scam is scouring the internet. Currently there is an email scam occurring where thieves, posing as someone the recipient knows and are phishing for personal, financial, and other private information. This includes requests for Google Play Gift Cards. Google asks its users to remember two very important truths about Google Play gift card scams, and these are true of any kind of reloadable payment card. First, it can never be used for any purpose other than downloading content from the Google Play Store. Second, you must protect the number like cash. No one will ever have a genuine reason to ask you for the number from the back of a card.


On May 14th, The Oak Bay Police Department attended a assault between a landlord and tenant. The suspect was arrested for assault and conditions not to contact the victim.


On May 17th, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a lost sterling silver Medical Alert bracelet. If located contact the Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424 and refer to Oak Bay File #2020-1553.
