MEDIA RELEASE – Oak Bay Reserve Constable Program

The Oak Bay Police Department is accepting resumes for our Reserve Constable Program. The next class is scheduled to begin in September 2022. We have one position open. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 20th, 2022 at 4:00pm.

Oak Bay Reserve Constables are volunteers. They provide support to the regular police members and provide service in community policing programs and activities. The Oak Bay Police Department operates a “Tier 1” Reserve Constable program which involves supporting our regular members in a patrol capacity. These ride-a-longs keep the Reserves current with Oak Bay Police policy, procedures, and how we do our jobs. They keep the Reserve members familiar with the Oak Bay area, local services, and communication systems. This ongoing experience maintains a high level of competence and provides the Reserve Constable with knowledge and expertise to deliver crime prevention and community policing programs to the citizens of Oak Bay. Reserves are expected to participate in crime prevention and community policing initiatives such as Speed Watch, Block Watch, Cell Watch, home and business security evaluations, and a host of others. You will see members of our Reserve Program at every event in Oak Bay.

The Oak Bay Police Department currently enjoys the assistance of 6 Reserve Constables. The minimum commitment expected is 120 hours per year for each Reserve Constable.

Applicants must:

  • Be 19 years of age, fit and healthy;
  • Not have a Criminal Record for which a pardon has not been granted;
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • Have completed High School (supported by transcripts);
  • Possess a valid Driver’s Licence and satisfactory driving record;
  • Possess a current First Aid Certificate with CPR; and
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills.

Application Process
Applicants who meet the above minimum standards will be required to submit a formal resume outlining their education, work experience, references, personal data, and a brief cover letter explaining why they want to participate in the Oak Bay Reserve Constable Program.

Subject to a number of further eligibility requirements, short-listed candidates will be invited to formally apply to the program. The formal portion of the process will involve medical exams, fitness tests, interviews and a detailed criminal record and background check.

Training
The Oak Bay Reserve Constable training will be conducted locally in partnership with the Victoria Police Department Reserve Program.

The training will consist of approximately 160 hours of classroom instruction and physical training. The training course will be delivered over about 4 months, consisting of 1-2 evenings a week and 1 weekend day. Practical and written exams are held for self defense and communications and two Provincial written exams are given on classroom studies. A minimum of 70% is required for all exams.

Upon graduation, recruits will be sworn in as “Special Constables” for the Province of BC.
