Weekly Media Release for Apr. 11th – Apr. 17th, 2022

On April 13th a complainant contacted the OBPD to report that she was the victim of an Amazon fraud over the phone in the amount of $955. The complainant quickly contacted her bank and the bank was able to reimburse her the money. They are now investigating the matter. Unfortunately this type of fraud is far too common and the fraudsters prey on the kindness of others to complete their schemes. (OBPD file 2022-1047)

On April 14th at 6:17pm, the OBPD received a report of a hit and run between a cyclist and a vehicle on Beach Dr near Estevan Ave. No injuries were sustained and there was no damage to the bicycle or vehicle. The 60 yr old suspect male driver left the scene after he was advised that police were being called to attend the scene. The suspect driver was located at his residence and an impaired driving investigation was conducted. After the impaired driving investigation, the male driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driving Prohibition, a 24 hr Driving Prohibition, and a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident. On April 15th at 4:24am the OBPD received a report of a male attempting to steal the lock box that contained the keys to an apartment building on Foul Bay Rd. The male was scared off before stealing anything. The male was described as Caucasian, 140 to 160 lbs, wearing a camouflage jacket and red pants. Patrols of the area for the male by police were negative. File is still under investigation. (OBPD file 2022-1054)

On April 15th the OBPD received a call from a complainant who had just read an article about the recent break and enter involving a stolen pillow case in Oak Bay. The complainant located a pillow case in an Oak Bay alley with numerous items and contacted police. Most of the items in the pillow case had indeed been items stolen in the recent break and enter in Oak Bay. Those items were returned to their rightful owner. (OBPD files 2022-1061 and 2022-1002)

The OBPD school liaison officer, Cst Mishrigi, had another busy week including going over safety procedures in a local school. Cst Mishrigi is also continuing her proactive work in the community to ensure that businesses are not falling victim to petty crimes from local students.
