The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 74 calls for service this week.
Lost Ring! Request for anyone in the Mt. Joy / Beach Drive area of Oak Bay to keep their eyes open for a lost ruby ring. Ruby is set in yellow gold with two side stones. Ring was lost on or about April 1, 2022. Please contact Oak Bay Police if you find this much missed piece of jewelry. (File 2022-952)
Shortly after midnight on April 6, 2022, in the 1100 Block of Beach Drive, an Oak Bay Police Officer observed a driver trying to put her newly fallen off bumper in the back seat of her car. The officer inquired as to what had taken place and the drive stated she had hit a rock. The driver exhibited signs of impairment and a demand to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device was made by the officer. The driver failed the roadside screening and was issued a 90 day driving prohibition and 30 day vehicle impound. The driver who only held a class 7 licence was also issued violation tickets for four counts of drive contrary to restrictions for the following contraventions: No Supervisor, Drive Past Midnight, Above 0-Blood Alcohol Content, and Too Many Passengers. Additional violation tickets for Fail to Display “L” Sign and Drive Without Due Care and Attention were also issued. (File 2022-972)
On April 6, 2022, in the area of Eastdowne Rd and Haultain St., a cyclist was struck by a vehicle door when the driver opened it to exit the vehicle after parking. The cyclist was transported to hospital for treatment of a broken ankle. Drivers are reminded to look out for cyclists when exiting your vehicle. The fine for opening your vehicle door when not safe to do so is $368. (File 2022-977)
On April 8, 2022 between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, Oak Bay Police received four reports of break and enter and attempt break and enter on Henderson Rd, Hamiota St, Beach Dr. and Dufferin Ave. The suspect entered homes through the backyards, opening or breaking into rear doors or windows. The suspect gained entry to one of the residences and stole an Ipad and a pillow case. Entry was not gained to the other two residences. The consistent description of the suspect is a male with dark hair who appears “scruffy”. Clothing description varied drastically between reports and it possible the suspect may have changed clothing between entry to each home. (Files 2022-1000,1002,1004,1006)
On the evening of April 9, 2022, Oak Bay Police officer was conducting radar speed enforcement in the 900 block of Beach Dr. The officer heard a loud engine revving observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Laser speed measuring device confirmed the vehicle was travelling at 87km/h in a posted 40km/h zone. Driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed, which carries a fine of $368 and three penalty points. The vehicle was impounded for seven days. (File 2022-1015)
