Weekly Media Release for Apr. 18 – Apr. 24, 2022

On April 19th, an Apple Watch was located in Oak Bay and brought to the OBPD front counter. If you lost your Apple Watch and can prove that you are the rightful owner of this watch please come by the Oak Bay Police Department. (OBPD file 2022-1088)

On April 19th, a complainant reported that he believed a male, who had broken his house window recently, was in the area. An OBPD member conducted patrols of the area and located the male. Police database queries of the male showed him to have a warrant out of a neighbouring jurisdiction. The male was arrested for that warrant and transported to cells. (OBPD file 2022-1090)

In the early morning on April 20th an OBPD member conducted a traffic stop near Foul Bay Rd and Newton St for a vehicle traveling at a speed of 86 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. The 17 yr old male “L” driver failed to produce a driver’s license and was driving contrary to his license restrictions. The driver was issued a violation ticket for Speeding in a Municipality and Fail to Produce Driver’s License. He was given a verbal warning for the remainder of the offences. (OBPD file 2022-1094)

On April 20th, a complainant reported damage to a new washroom on the Uplands Golf Course. The door to the men’s washroom has been kicked in three times since the washroom has been built. The reported damage was valued at approximately $500. The OBPD is conducting extra patrols in the area. (OBPD file 2022-1095)

On April 20th, a complainant reported a hit and run to a vehicle in the 700 block of Oliver St. The victim vehicle was parked and unoccupied at the time. There was very minimal damage to the parked vehicle. The complainant witnessed the incident and reported it to police including the license plate of the vehicle that caused the accident. The driver returned to the scene the next day and contacted the owner of the truck that she had struck. (OBPD file 2022-1107)

On April 22nd, an OBPD member was conducting speed enforcement on Cedar Hill Cross Road near Crestview Rd. A vehicle was found to be going 96 km/hr in a 50 km/hr speed zone. The 24 yr old male driver was issued a violation ticket for Excessive Speeding ($368) and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. (OBPD file 2022-1130)

In the late hours of April 22nd, OBPD members initiated a road block on Foul Bay Rd. As a result of the road block the following were issued: one violation ticket for no insurance, one Notice and Order document for a license plate issue, and one document for a three month driving prohibition. Numerous drivers were stopped to check their sobriety and no drivers were found to be impaired. (OBPD file 2022-1131)

In the evening of April 23rd, an OBPD member was conducting traffic enforcement on Cedar Hill Cross Red near Crestview Rd. A vehicle was located travelling 112 km/h in a 50 km/h speed zone. The 19 yr old male driver was issued an Excessive Speeding ticket ($480) and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OBPD file 2022-1140)

In the evening of April 23rd, OBPD members conducted a roadblock on Oak Bay Ave. Two violation tickets were issued and 2 sobriety tests were conducted. No one was found to be impaired. (OBPD file 2022-1142)

Early in the morning on April 24th, a traffic stop was initiated with a vehicle in the 3000 block of Foul Bay Rd when it was found to be going 70 km/h in a 50 km/h speed zone. While speaking with the driver, the OBPD member started an impaired driving investigation. The 19 yr old male driver blew a “Warn” into an Approved Screening Device. This resulted in the male driver receiving a 3 day Immediate Driving Prohibition as well as having his vehicle impounded for three days. The male driver was also issued a violation ticket for Speeding and Driving Contrary to Restrictions. (OBPD file 2022-1148)

On April 24th, a complainant reported that his white Titan Zodiac equipped with a 700cc outboard motor had been stolen near the Oak Bay Marina. The total value of the stolen items is $2500. A witness has been identified and police have spoken to him. The witness observed a white sailboat towing the Zodiac away from the area at around 09:00 that morning. The file is still under investigation. (OBPD file 2022-1151)

Our OBPD school liaison officer, Cst Mishrigi, has the privilege of working with numerous staff members within the school system including the counselor for the school district. By working closely with school staff and district staff, Cst Mishrigi is able to be part of the larger school community to help all students with whatever needs they have. This week Cst Mishrigi worked with a local school vice principal on an online safety presentation that will be presented to students at a later time.
