The Oak Bay Police Department is accepting applications for the exciting and challenging volunteer position of Reserve Constable.
The volunteer-based program is looking for individuals with an interest in law enforcement, crime prevention and community service. Through the OBPD Reserve Constable Program, volunteers will benefit from their experiences working alongside our police officers in a support capacity and will receive pertinent training in many aspects of law enforcement. Our Reserves are important members of the OBPD team and are instrumental in our ability to provide many of our Crime Prevention programs while also being available to assist with many of the numerous special events that take place in the community.
Applicants to this program will be required to pass physical and medical tests, background checks and criminal record checks prior to moving on to the interview component of the application process. A valid BC driver’s licence is also required.
All successful candidates will be expected to volunteer an average of 16 hours per month and to attend mandatory training and re-certifications as required.
Successful candidates must complete the basic Reserve Officers training mandated by the BC Ministry of Justice. Training takes about 4 months with classes held one evening a week and one weekend day. Candidates study legal issues, crime prevention, traffic, professionalism and ethics, communication tactics and self-defense training. Practical and written exams are held for self defense and communications and two Provincial written exams are given on classroom studies. Training also has a strong physical/team building component.
The next Reserve Constable course is scheduled to start in November, 2015. Applications to the Program must be received prior to September 15, 2015.
