Overnight on April 6th an unlocked vehicle was entered in the 800 block of Hampshire Rd and a set of golf clubs were stolen. Another unlocked vehicle was entered without loss. The public is reminded to lock your vehicles and to not leave any valuable items inside.

On April 10th at around 0715 AM a parked vehicle was struck in the 700 block of Transit Rd by an unknown northbound vehicle, possibly blue in colour. The suspect vehicle will have damage to the front left corner. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oak Bay Police Department, 250-592-2424.

On April 12th at 1255 AM a late 90’s Chrysler Concorde struck a parked vehicle in the 1800 Block of Beach Drive and left the scene of the collision. Some time later the Concorde was located by police three blocks south of the scene of the collision (not far from Glen Lyon Norfolk School.). Police investigations resulted in a 39 year old Saanich male being the subject of an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, the impoundment of his vehicle and the recipient of a violation ticket for Hit and Run (Motor Vehicle Act). No injuries were suffered as a result of the collision. The collision and the sound of the damaged vehicle driving away was heard by a resident but they did not call the police. Members of the public are encouraged to call police at the time of these occurrences.

In December, 2012, a male broke into a locker in an Oak Bay Rec Centre change room, stole a wallet and keys and within minutes was using the stolen credit cards to make purchases. Investigation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant and on April 14th the Victoria Police Department arrested Robert Wilson, 38 yrs, of no fixed address. He was held in custody until a court appearance on April 15th.

Overnight April 14th a vehicle was stopped on Lansdowne Rd for defective headlights and the driver was found to have been drinking. Investigation led to the driver being issued a 90 Day Driving Prohibition and a ticket for driving contrary to the no alcohol restriction on his licence. The car was impounded for 30 days and an safety inspection was ordered.

In the interest of Road Safety the Oak Bay Police Department has stepped up it’s enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Act with a particular focus on the illegal use of electronic devices – cell phones and hand held music devices and the improper or non-use of seatbelt assemblies. Since March 1st 174 Violation Tickets and written warnings have been issued for various infractions. The driving public is reminded that using a cell phone in a hand-held fashion is distracting and illegal – even if it’s is being held with the speaker phone feature employed. The law defines an “electronic device” as “(a) a hand-held cellular telephone or another hand-held electronic device that includes a telephone function,
b) a hand-held electronic device that is capable of transmitting or receiving electronic mail or other text-based messages, or
(c) a prescribed class or type of electronic device;”
Further “use”, in relation to an electronic device, means one or more of the following actions:
(a) holding the device in a position in which it may be used;
(b) operating one or more of the device’s functions;
(c) communicating orally by means of the device with another person or another device;
(d) taking another action that is set out in the regulations by means of, with or in relation to an electronic device. (section 214.1, BC Motor Vehicle Act.)
