On April 9th at 10:30 pm police received a complaint of Break and Enter from a resident in the 400 block of Newport Ave. The complainant had left one of her two automobiles parked on the driveway and the other automobile parked inside the garage. The vehicle outside had been left unlocked and an unknown person rifled through the vehicle, located the garage opener, and activated the opener thereby gaining access to the inside of the garage. The second vehicle was also rifled through with a small amount of money being stolen and a brown Specialized mountain bike was also stolen from inside the garage.
April 10th was a busy day for reports of thefts from vehicles. At 6:45 am police received a complaint from a resident that a vehicle in the 400 block of Transit Rd, was entered overnight. The vehicle had been left unlocked. Nothing was stolen, but the interior was ransacked.
At 7:30 am police received a complaint from a resident in the 500 block of Island Road that the passenger side window of his pick-up truck had been smashed sometime overnight. Stolen from inside the vehicle was a cell phone.
At 6:05 pm another report of a theft from automobile that had occurred overnight in the 300 block of King George Terrace. Although the owner thought they had locked the vehicle, the alarm did not sound and there was no damage to the vehicle. It appears the vehicle was left unlocked. The interior was rummaged and a small amount of change stolen.
Also on April 10th at 1:20 pm police were called to a non-injury motor vehicle accident involving a car and a transit bus on Ring Road at the University of Victoria. The driver of the SUV missed the exit off Ring road and came to a sudden stop and immediately began reversing and backed into the front end of the BC Transit bus. In addition to damage to the rear of the SUV, two bicycles that were attached to the front of the Transit bus were also damaged. The driver of the SUV was issued a traffic ticket for Reversing when Unsafe.
On April 11th at 1:00 pm a resident in the 900 block of Hampshire Rd reported that his vehicle was entered overnight. Parked in the driveway and left unlocked, the vehicle was rummaged through but nothing appeared to be missing.
As can be seen this past week, a number of vehicles were left unlocked and thieves took advantage to enter and rummage through the vehicles in search of money and valuables. The best defence against having your vehicle entered is to remove ALL valuables from the interior, secure all windows and lock the doors!
