Weekly Media Release Dec 19-25, 2016

On December 20th two vehicles collided in the 3600 block of Cadboro Bay Rd. One of the vehicles had stopped for a traffic control person working at a tree trimming location. The driver behind became distracted by a deer at the side of the road and rear ended the stopped vehicle. Damage was minor and there were no injuries but Oak Bay Police would like to remind drivers to keep their focus on the task at hand. Distracted driving does not always involve electronic devices.

On December 23rd Oak Bay Police responded to an alarm at a residence in Uplands. Entry was attempted by using an object of opportunity to smash the glass on an exterior door. The Saanich Police Forensic Identification Service attended and determined that the culprit had not made full entry into the residence. They were likely scared off by the activation of the audible alarm. This case proves, once again, the value of securing your home and investing in an alarm system.

Over the past week there have been two reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles and one report of a theft a jacket containing a wallet and cell phone from a waiting room in an office on Oak Bay Ave. Many of our thefts in Oak Bay are crimes of opportunity. Please remember to secure your belongings no matter where they may be.

There have been two reports of hit and run accidents involving pedestrians in the past week. Fortunately injuries were minor in both cases. Drivers must remain on scene no matter how minor any contact may be. Failure to do so may result in criminal charges or Motor Vehicle Act sanctions.
