The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 53 calls for service this week.
Bylaw
On April 16 at 8:34 p.m., officers responded to a report of a beach fire at Willows Beach. The individuals involved were educated on the applicable fire bylaw, and the fire was extinguished by the parties involved. Beach fires are not permitted anywhere in Oak Bay and may result in a $260 fine. (File 2026-1071)
Traffic Enforcement (Impaired Driving)
Overnight on April 17, officers conducted impaired driving roadblocks at various locations throughout Oak Bay. One driver was issued a 12-hour driving prohibition, and their driver’s licence was temporarily seized. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair your ability to drive. (File 2026-1083)
On April 18 at approximately 1:50 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 2700 block of Oak Bay Avenue. A roadside screening demand resulted in a “warn” reading. The driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition, their vehicle was impounded, and their driver’s licence was seized. Plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home before you go out. (File 2026-1087)
Traffic Enforcement (Excessive Speed)
On April 18 at 10:15 p.m., while conducting speed enforcement in the 900 block of Beach Drive, officers stopped a vehicle travelling 87 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle was impounded for the mandatory seven-day period. Driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit results in immediate impoundment and significant penalties. (File 2026-1092)
Theft (Recovered Property)
On April 15, officers responded to a report of a smartwatch stolen from a public change room earlier in the week. Using built‑in tracking technology, the owner was able to locate the device at a nearby residential building. Police attended and spoke with the individual in possession of the watch, which was returned to the owner without incident. No charges will result. Police remind the public that found property should always be turned in to facility staff or police to avoid potential legal consequences. (File 2026-1059)
