The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 89 calls for service this week.
On August 15, 2022, the Oak Bay Police received a request from the Saanich Police to help locate a man suffering a mental health crisis who was believed to be in Oak Bay. The 23-year-old man was located by Oak Bay Police near Cattle Point. Using de-escalation techniques, the male was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to the hospital for follow-up care. (OBPD 2022-2515)
On August 18, 2022, at approximately 12:50pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a male passed-out in the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle parked near the 2100 block of Crescent Rd. Police attended and during the investigation, it was believed that the male driver was impaired by drugs. The Oak Bay police officer, who is a drug recognition expert, conducted a drug recognition evaluation of the male and based on the evaluation it was determined that the male was impaired by drugs. Police searched the vehicle incidental to the arrest and located drugs and paraphernalia, consistent with drug trafficking. Police are continuing the investigation and will be submitting charge recommendations to Crown Counsel. (OBPD 2022-2550)
On August 21, 2022, at 12:10am, a member of the Oak Bay Police Department was conducting speed enforcement on Foul Bay Rd. A vehicle was observed travelling 28km/h over the speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, the officer noted that the 49-year-old female driver had been consuming alcohol, The officer entered into an impaired driving investigation, and as a result the driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, her vehicle was impounded for 30 days and she received Violation Tickets for speeding, failing to produce her driver’s licence and failing to display the N sign. On August 21, 2022, Oak Bay Police responded to three residential break and enters. At approximately 5:00pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter in the 2100 block of Granite St. Police attended and learned the suspect entered through an unlocked back door and stole approximately $8,000 worth of electronic equipment and silverware. A neighbour observed the suspect leaving the residence and described the suspect as a Caucasian male, 5’9”, 25-30 years old, dark shorts, a dark or checkered shirt, tattoo on his arm, closely shaved hair, clean shaven with a large dark backpack. Later, on August 21, 2022, at approximately 7:50pm, an Oak Bay resident called 911 to report a break and enter in progress. The resident had returned to the family home in the 3100 block of Rutland Rd and confronted a man in the foyer of the home. The man stated he had let the family dog out because it had been barking. The man then fled the property. Police arrived, cleared the residence and searched the area however the suspect was not located. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 6’ tall, slim build, wearing cargo pants, a grey t-shirt, a black medical mask, black backpack and riding a full suspension mountain bike. It was later determined approximately $700.00 worth of electronics was stolen from the home. The family dog was later located unharmed and reunited with the family. Within the hour Oak Bay Police responded to another report of a residential break and enter at the 3100 block of Beach Drive. Officers attended and searched the residence; however, the suspect had fled. A rear patio door was found insecure. CCTV video was reviewed and showed a suspect matching the same description as the suspect from the previously reported break and enter. No property was reported stolen from this home.
