Weekly Media Release for Aug. 19 – Aug. 25, 2024

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 70 calls for service this week.

Collision

On August 19, 2024, at 12:15pm, the Oak Bay Police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Cedar Hill Cross Rd near Henderson Rd. It was determined that a vehicle was Westbound on Cedar Hill Cross Rd, and a second vehicle was parked facing Westbound on Cedar Hill Cross Rd. The parked vehicle made an unsafe start into traffic and failed to yield to the Westbound vehicle. The Westbound vehicle struck the vehicle pulling out from the parked position and flipped over landing on its roof. The Oak Bay Fire Department attended and extracted the driver from the flipped over vehicle, the driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, it was determined they did not suffer any injuries. The 49-year-old woman driving the vehicle leaving the parked position was issued a Violation Ticket for Unsafe Start S. 169(1) MVA $109. A tow truck was required for the heavily damaged vehicle that flipped over. (OB File 24-2218)

Collision

On August 20, 2024, at 1:30pm, an Oak Bay Police officer was departing the police station when they observed a vehicle travelling Southbound on Monterey Ave had collided with a parked vehicle. The driver stated that he was distracted by the Fire Department and drove into the parked vehicle. The 70-year-old man was uninjured and was issued a Violation Ticket for Drive without Due Care and Attention S. 144(1) MVA $368. Both vehicles were towed from the scene as they sustained heavy damage. (OB File 24-2233)

No Insurance 

On August 22, 2024, at 8:50pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting a Counterattack road check on Lansdowne Rd at Westdowne, Rd. Police stopped a Honda Civic and determined the insurance had expired 3 days earlier. The 20-year-old man was issued a Violation Ticket for No Insurance S. 24(3)(b) MVA $598, and the vehicle was towed to the owner’s residence. (OB File 24-2258)

Theft of Motor Vehicle

On August 24, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a stolen vehicle. The owner reported that their blue 2006 Honda Civic had been stolen from the 2000 block of Mowat St sometime between August 23 at 7:50pm and August 24 at 3:00am. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-2264)

No Insurance

On August 24, 2024, at 6:30pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting enforcement on Beach Dr. A Northbound vehicle was observed travelling 61km/h in a 40km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 49-year-old man. Police discovered that the Lincoln Navigators insurance had expired in March 2024. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Speed S. 146(7) MVA $138 and No Insurance S. 24(3)(b) MVA $598. The vehicle was towed to the owner’s residence. (OB File 24-2266)
