The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 106 calls for service this week.
On August 29th, 2022, Oak Bay Police received report of a theft from motor vehicle that occurred on the evening of August 25, 2022, in the 1500 block of Hampshire Road. An older model pickup truck was entered by and unknown suspect who stole a skateboard, Bluetooth speaker, shoes, and a sweater. Police were able to obtain video from a business in the area showing the suspect who is described as a white male, approximately 30 years old, with long blond hair, wearing a black ball cap, dark zip up jacket and dark shorts. The incident is still under investigation. (OB 22-2676)
On September 1st, 2022, Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft that occurred from a business on Oak Bay Avenue. The owner reported on August 31, 2022, between 1:00pm-1:15pm an unidentified male entered the store and stole a beta fish along with two packages of food worth approximately $70.00. Police obtained video surveillance of the theft and suspect. The suspect has been identified and Oak Bay Police want to thank the public for their assistance.. (OB 22-2727)
On September 2nd, 2022, Oak Bay Police were called to a residence in the 3100 block of Wessex Close regarding a residential break and enter. The homeowner returned home to find clothing and personal items strewn about the front entrance. Police attended and investigation determined an unknown suspect(s) had entered the home by breaking through a window. It appears exterior cameras on the home had been tampered with to prevent detection. The entire home was ransacked. A computer tablet and several pieces of jewellery were stolen. Investigation is ongoing. (OB 22-2750)
On September 3rd, 2022, while in the area for a noise complainant, an Oak Bay Police officer observed a male, know to have strict house arrest conditions, in the passenger seat of vehicle travelling on Oak Bay Avenue. Officers located the male in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave and placed him under arrest for breaching his Conditional Sentence Order. A search of the man, incidental to arrest, located a quantity of suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia. The man also had in his possession a credit card which is believed to have been stolen. The male was transported to Saanich Police Department and lodged in cells and remanded into custody in order to be brought before the courts. Investigation is ongoing for charges of possession of a controlled substance, fraud, possession of stolen property and breach of Conditional Sentence Order.
On September 4th, 2022, Oak Bay Police were called to the 1900 block of Bee St for a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. Officers attended and located a vehicle with a broken window. The owner advised their iPhone mini and a small bag containing identification and credit cards was taken. While cancelling the credit cards the complainant learned the credit cards had been used in several fraudulent transactions. Police are working to obtain video surveillance at the locations of the frauds to identify a suspect. (OB 22-2771)
Bike Thefts:
On August 29th, 2022, police received a report of bicycle stolen off a vehicle bike carrier rack. The theft took place in the 2600 block of Burdick Ave sometime over night. The bicycle, a Norco Yorkville commuter, was not secured to the rack by a lock. There were no witnesses or video surveillance in the area for police to follow up on. (OB 22-2672)
On September 2nd, 2022, Oak Bay Police received a report of a bicycle stolen from outside a business on Oak Bay Avenue. The owner stated to police he left the bike locked up overnight. He returned the following day to find his bicycle gone and his cut bicycle lock left behind. The owner was able to provide police with a serial number for identification. The bicycle is described as a white Cannondale Quick. The investigation remains open. (OB 22-2743)
On September 3rd, 2022, Oak Bay Police were advised of a theft of bicycle wheels that occurred in the 1300 block of Beach Dr. Unknown suspects removed the wheels from the complainants’ TREK bicycle while he was in the area fishing. A witness to the theft described one of the suspects as a Caucasian youth with bright red or orange hair, cut in a boxy style, riding a red BMX bicycle. The incident is still under investigation. On September 4th, 2022, Oak Bay Police were advised of a theft of bicycle that occurred between September 2nd and 4th. The bicycle was stolen from a parking lot in the 1300 block of Beach Dr. The bicycle is described as a Supercycle Solaris black in colour. (22-2776)
Police recommend investing in a quality lock to secure your bicycle as well as registering your bicycle with Garage 529. This will assist officers in having the best chance of locating and identifying your property when stolen.
