Weekly Media Release for Sept. 4 – Sept. 11, 2022

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 87 calls for service that week.

On September 4, 2022, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a theft from auto in the 1900 block of Bee St. The complainant reported that parked their vehicle in the parking lot at approximately 8:00am that morning and returned an hour later to find that the driver’s side window of their Nissan Sentra had been smashed out. A number of personal items were stolen including a blue Apple Iphone mini and credit cards. The credit cards were used a short time later at two nearby businesses. This investigation is still under investigation. (OB 2022-2771)

On September 6, 2022, at approximately 10:43 am, the Oak Bay Police were dispatched to the intersection of Oak Bay Ave and Elgin Rd in regards to pedestrian struck in the crosswalk. The 15-year female pedestrian suffered minor injuries. She was transported to hospital by ambulance. The 95 year old driver of the vehicle was subsequently charged with for Fail to stop at a red light at intersection, section 129(1) Motor Vehicle Act which carried a fine of $167.00 and 2 demerit points. On September 6, 2022, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a theft from auto in the 1900 block of Bee St. The complainant reported that they parked their vehicle in the parking lot On September 4 between 8:00am-12 noon. The vehicle was left unlocked and was undamaged. A number of personal items were stolen including a black Maui sunglasses valued at $200.00, and gift cards. (OB 2022-2795)

On September 7, 2022, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of theft from vehicle in the 2000 block of Bowker Ave. The complainant reported that they parked their pickup truck on evening of September 4th with a full tank of diesel. The complainant noticed that the gas cover of their truck was open. Upon turning on the pickup, the complainant noticed that someone had siphoned half a tank of diesel. There are no suspects in this file. (OB 2022-2803)

On September 8, 2022, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a fraud. The complainant reported that they had an email confirming that an E-transfer had occurred on their TD Canada Trust bank account. The complainant contacted the bank and learned that a total of $3500.00 had been withdrawn from their account on three different occasions. TD Canada Trust have started an internal investigation. This file is still under investigation. (OB2022-2817)

On September 9, 2022, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an attempted fraud. The complainant reported that they were on their home computer, and they received a warning that their computer had been hacked and they needed to contact “Microsoft” immediately. The complainant called the number provided and was advised that their banking information has been compromised. While on the phone with the “Microsoft technical support” They were instructed to open a new bank account and transfer $45,000 from their account to the new account. The transfer was unsuccessful, and they were told to transfer $25,000. This transfer was also unsuccessful, so they were instructed to wire transfer the money. The complainant attended their branch and again attempted to transfer the money. A branch employee recognized the fraud attempt and froze the account before any money was transferred. At this point in time, it is believed that the complainant likely clicked on a malware virus that locked her out of her computer. (OB 2022-2840)
