Weekly Media Release for the Week of September 12 to 18, 2022

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 85 calls for service this week.

September 13: The Oak Bay Police Department’s School Liaison Officer received a report of drivers not obeying the school crosswalk guards. The complainant reported that the driver of another vehicle gestured to them for stopping them while children were about to cross. No licence plate was obtained in this incident and the driver was not spoken to. The Oak Bay Police Department wishes to remind all drivers of the following:

  • School zone speed limits are now back in effect. This means a 30km/h speed limit in all marked school zones, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all regular school days.
  • Do not park inside or over a designated crosswalk.
  • Do not pass a stopped vehicle that is allowing pedestrians to cross the street.
  • When approaching a school bus with its lights flashing and its stop sign extended, drivers in both lanes of traffic must come to a complete stop until the bus driver has turned off the lights and retracted the stop sign.
  • Obey the directions of the crossing guards.

September 15: The Oak Bay Police Department received a report of theft in the 2000 block of Newton St. The complainant reported that a package was stolen from their porch. The package contained six swimming parkas valued at $150.00 each. The parkas are full length and are black in colour with the “Oak Bay Orcas Swim Club” on the front and back of each parka as well as the swimmer’s last name. There are no suspects in this file. September 13: At 4:15pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a motor vehicle collision in the 2000 block of Estevan Ave. The complainant reported that their vehicle had been hit by another vehicle while it was backing out of a parking spot. The driver of that vehicle, a 60-year-old female, got out of their car and spoke with the complainant. The complainant reported a strong odour of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath. Police attended and spoke with the female. Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver had been drinking that afternoon. The driver subsequently blew a “fail” and was issued a 90-day IRP and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days. No injuries were reported (File 2022-2880)

September 14: At 4:45am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter of a business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The complainant reported that they were notified by the alarm company that the alarm had been triggered. Upon arrival at the business, the complainant observed a door had been damaged. Police attended and conducted a search of the business. The scene was processed by Saanich Police Identification Section. A suspect has been identified in the file. This file is still under investigation. (OB2022-2883)

September 14: At 12:30pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a bicycle theft in the 1900 block of Bee St. The complainant reported that their bike was stolen from the bike rack. While the member was taking the report, a second complainant reported that their bike had also been stolen.

  • Bike 1- black specialized 3.0 road bike with red writing
  • Bike 2- light blue Norco Search gravel bike

No dollar value was obtained for these items.

September 14: At approximately 1:00 pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of theft from auto in the 2000 block of Kinross Ave. The complainant reported that they parked their car shortly after midnight in front of their residence. They returned to the vehicle at 11:30 that morning and noticed that their bank card was missing along with $50.00 cash and a skateboard. No suspects have been identified in this file. (OB2022-2888)

September 14: At 4:30pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of theft of a bicycle in the 1900 block of Bee St. The complainant reported that their bike was stolen from the bike rack. The bicycle was described as a Devinci St Tropez model, silver in colour. This file is still under investigation. (OB2022-2891)

September 15: At 3:35pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a residential break and enter in the 3000 block of Cardriff Place. The complainant reported that someone had broken into their garage and stole a 2016 Opus Hardtail Mountain Bike. The bike had a black frame with red stripping and white lettering. The complainant also reported that a bottle of alcohol and a Karcher pressure washer had also been stolen. The theft is believed to have happened overnight. A bike was left behind as well as a duffle bag containing a few items. This file is still under investigation. (OB2022-2900)

September 17: At 9:30pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of theft of bicycles in the 1900 block of Bee St. The complainant reported that their bike was stolen from the bike rack. The bicycle was reported to be an orange Norco Storm. There are no suspects in this investigation. This file is still under investigation.
