The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 89 calls for service this week.

Attempted Theft from Vehicle

On June 10, at 1:00 pm, police received a report of an incident in the 2000 block of Milton Street that happened on June 7, 2026 at 3:40 am, regarding an individual who was captured on video attempting multiple vehicle door handles before gaining access to an unlocked vehicle; no damage was caused and nothing was reported stolen.

Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles, remove valuables, and report any suspicious activity promptly to police. (2026-1715)

Fraud
Police are warning the public following a reported fraud targeting a local resident on June 12, 2026. The victim was contacted by individuals posing as “Visa Security” and convinced to purchase Apple gift cards totaling $2,500, while being coached to remain on the phone throughout the process and mislead store staff. The victim later provided the card access codes to the suspects, enabling them to access the funds.

Residents are reminded that legitimate financial institutions will never request payment via gift cards or ask you to remain on the phone while completing transactions. Anyone receiving similar calls should hang up immediately and report the incident to police. (2026-1738)

 Vehicle Impoundment (Impaired Driving)
Police conducted a sobriety roadblock on June 13, 2026 at 8:45 pm, in the area of Oak Bay Avenue and Elgin Road, resulting in one driver receiving a 3-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The driver was stopped after attempting to avoid the roadblock and provided two breath samples, both registering a “warn” result. The driver’s vehicle was impounded, and they were prohibited from driving.

OBPD reminds motorists that alcohol can impair driving ability even at lower levels and encourages the use of safe transportation options when consuming alcohol. (2026-1764)
