Weekly Media Release for Mar. 21 – Mar. 27, 2022

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 62 calls for service this week.

This week officers charged 6 drivers with using an electronic device while driving, which carries a fine of $386 and four driver penalty points.

On March 22, 2022, Oak Bay Police attended a residence in the 2700 Block of Cadboro Bay Rd. for reports of a break and enter that occurred on March 12, 2022. The complainant reported that while he was absent from home, several pieces of identification as well as an iPhone 8 were taken from his home. The complainant was able to provide police with video surveillance which showed a Caucasian, approximately 30-40 years of age, wearing baggy clothing and a DHL courier t-shirt, carrying a black backpack. It is not believed that the male works for DHL. The investigation is ongoing. Residents are reminded to lock entry doors and to keep important documents and identification in a secure area of your home.

On March 22, 2022, while conducting patrols of University of Victoria campus Oak Bay Police located a vehicle associated to an individual for whom an arrest warrant for weapons related charges had been issued. Members of Oak Bay Police and Saanich Police Departments took the male into custody. He was taken to Saanich Police Department where he was held to appear before the courts on three counts of Failing to Comply with Release Order and Mischief Under $5000.

On March 24, 2022, Oak Bay Police attended a business on Oak Bay Avenue in response to reports of a shoplifter. Staff advised that a young, Caucasian male had stolen a white baseball cap from the store. Investigation determined the male was also alleged to have stolen items from the same store earlier in the month. Officers were able to determine the identity of the male and warrants for his arrest in both incidents have been requested.

On March 25, 2022, Oak Bay Police received a report of two suspicious males trespassing on a residential property on University Woods. The property owner advised that the individuals had been seen on video surveillance on three separate occasions walking around the property. The males are between the ages of 18-30 years, and dressed in casual clothing, some of which displays the ‘UVIC’ logo. Police have increased patrols in the area and the identity of the individuals is still under investigation. Residents in the area are asked to contact police to report any suspicious activity and are reminded to keep vehicle and residence doors secure.
