The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 57 calls for service this week.
March is distracted driving month and the Oak Bay Police were cracking down on driver’s using electronic devices. During the week, police charged 14 drivers’ with using an electronic device while driving, which carries a fine of $368 and four driver penalty points. The Oak Bay Police are reminding all drivers to focus on the road and leave the phones alone.

On March 16, 2022, OBPD received a complaint from a local business regarding a male who had just stolen several items. Police attended and located the male a short distance away. The 41 year old male was arrested for theft. The male was also in breach of his unrelated release conditions. The male was released to appear in court on a later date. Police are recommending charges of Theft, Possession of Stolen Property and Breach of Conditions.

During the evening of March 16, 2022, the Oak Bay Police were conducting traffic enforcement on Newport Ave. A vehicle was observed travelling 85 km/h in the posted 40 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and the 58 year old male driver was subsequently issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed with a fine amount of $368 and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On the evening of March 16, 2022, police were again conducting speed enforcement on Newport Ave. A vehicle was observed travelling 104 km/h in the posted 40km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted and during the investigation, the officer formed the opinion that the 41 year old male driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. As a result of the investigation, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment and a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed with a fine amount of $483.
