Weekly Media Release for May 9th – 15th, 2022

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 63 calls for service this week.

On May 10, 2022, a resident in the 1300 block of Victoria Ave contacted Oak Bay Police regarding a suspicious male seen in their back yard.  The male was described as Caucasian, approximately 30 years old, 5’10”, medium build, wearing a baseball cap, zip up jacket and baggy pants.  No theft, no damage to property (22-1344)

On the afternoon of May 10, 2022, Oak Bay Police were called to the 600 block of Monterey Ave for reports of a break and enter.  The homeowner advised they had returned home to find a male in their backyard, whom they believed to have just been inside the house.  The homeowner chased the male into the back yard of a residence in the 2200 block of Central Ave.  A third neighbour advised the male ran through the back yard in the 700 block of Hampshire Rd.  Police K-9 was engaged and conducted a track, however due to high foot traffic was unable to continue.  The male is described as having tanned skin, dark hair, 5’3” average build and scruffy appearance.  He was wearing a dark jacket and dark jeans. After speaking with neighbours, two other residents came forward in the area to report attempted entry into their homes.  (22-1348/1348/1352/1353)

Police would like to remind resident to keep doors and windows locked as the weather warms to prevent unwanted entry.

On May 11, 2022, at approximately 21:40hrs Oak Bay police were called the area of Estevan Ave and Beach Dr for reports of a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road, and then reversing a long distance before striking a parked car.  The witness on scene was concerned the driver may be impaired by alcohol.  He also advised the driver stated the parked vehicle also belonged to him.  Police attended and located the driver at his residence.  Police made demand for the driver to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device.  The driver refused to provide a sample and as such was arrested for Refusing to Provide a breath sample and released with a court date and 90-day Administrative Driving Prohibition. On May 13, 2022, Oak Bay Police were notified of an assault that took place on May 10, at approximately 9pm in the area of Crescent Rd near Harling Point.  The male suspect is described as Caucasian male, 5’8”, clean shaven, with short brown hair, who appeared to be in his late 20s.  At the time of the incident the male was wearing a dark puffy jacket, possibly Arc’Teryx brand.  Anyone with information is asked to contact police.  (22-1385)

On May 14, 2022, Oak Bay Police were notified of extensive graffiti committed in the freshly painted baseball dugout at Carnarvon Park.  Police attended and documented the graffiti.  The incident is still under investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to contact police.  (22-1393)

On May 15, 2022, Oak Bay Police were called to the 1500 block of Currie Rd for reports of a male asleep in a vehicle.  Officers attended and located the vehicle parked, but running, on the side of the road.  The male driver did not wake until officers opened the vehicle door.  A strong odour of alcohol was detected, and officers observed several empty beer cans on the passenger seat.  Policed demanded the driver provide a breath sample into an approved screening device.  The resulting sample produced a ‘fail’.  The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
