The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 65 calls for service this week.
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
On Monday November 27, 2023, at approximately 3:10 am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a car alarm going off in the 500 block of Oliver St. A man was observed running away from the vehicle by Oak Bay resident that called in the alarm. Officers attended and located a 24-year-old man in the area that matched the description given to them by the resident. During the investigation, police located a wallet with identification belonging to a Saanich resident that reported their wallet had been stolen and their credit card had been used in several fraudulent transactions in October. The man was arrested for possession of stolen property. The man was also in possession of other items, including two Ray Ban sun glass, coins and a knife. The property was believed to have been stolen. Police are recommending a charge of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Section 354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada (OB2023-3588)
On December 1, 2023, at approx. 1125a.m. the same man was arrested in the 1700 block of Hampshire Rd. after being observed stealing items from unlocked vehicles. The 24-year-old man was later released with additional charges; breach of undertaking and possession of property obtained by crime being sought. Credit cards and wallets belonging to nearby citizens was located upon arrest of man and returned to the rightful owners. (OBPD2023-3642)
Excessive Speed
On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at approximately 7:45pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement in the 1000 block of Beach Dr. A 31-year-old man was stopped for going 97km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed Section 148(1) MVA in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3614)

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at approximately 10:15pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement in the 1000 block of Beach Dr. A 24-year-old woman was stopped for going 100km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed Section 148(1) MVA in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3628)
Theft/Fraud
On Friday December 1, 2023, at approximately 9:00pm, Oak Bay Police received a report an unknown person had stolen a wallet, containing credit cards and identification, car keys and clothing from a locker at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. The thief later used the stolen credit cards in fraudulent transactions. The investigation is ongoing. Police would like to remind citizens that it is important to secure personal items at public facilities and lock their motor vehicles. (OBPD2023-3646)
Event Lighted Truck Parade
On Saturday December 2, 2023, OBPD officers assisted with traffic safety and road closures for the annual Christmas lighted truck parade that found its way travelling through Oak Bay at approximately 6:00pm. This event was a success again and a great turnout by Oak Bay residents.
Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle – ‘Warn’ 3-day license suspension/vehicle seizure.
On Saturday December 2, 2023, at approximately 8:00pm, Oak Bay Police partnered with the Integrated Road Safety Unit in Royal Oak and conducted a roadside check stop to check the sobriety levels of drivers. A 70-year-old female driver was checked and registered a ‘warn’ on an approved screening device and issued a 3-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 3 days. (OBPD 2023-3652).
