The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 95 calls for service this week.
On October 3, 2022, at approximately 2:45pm, the Oak Bay Police Department responded to a report of theft from a vehicle in the 2000 block of Dover Rd. The complainant reported their 2016 Ford Explorer had been broken into overnight. The suspect caused damage to the glovebox and the dashboard. Approximately $20.00 in change was stolen from the vehicle. No suspects have been identified in this file. (OBPD File 2022-3118)
On October 6, 2022, at 4:00pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an online fraud. The complainant reported their bank contacted them after the bank recognized a fraudulent transfer of $1000.00 to an out of province branch. The bank froze the account. No additional transfers occurred, or funds lost. This file is still under investigation. (OBPD File 2022-3162)
On October 7, 2022, at 3:00pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an online fraud. The complainant reported they received an email from a company claiming to be “The Geek Squad” advising them there was a serious issue with their computer. The email indicated they could fix the issue remotely. The complainant received a phone call later that day from a male who identified himself as “Wilson” and worked for company. The male indicated they accidently took a payment of $290.00 out of their account, but during the transfer, they refunded him $29,000.00 and requested they be reimbursed. The male provided the complainant with branch information for banks in Cambodia. The complainant attended their bank and attempted to refund the money. The bank determined a fraud was taking place and froze the account. This file is still under investigation. (OBPD File 2022-3168)
On October 8, 2022, at 8:20am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of damage to a vehicle in the 2000 block of McNeill Ave. The complainant reported at approximately 12:00am that morning they noticed a person in their vehicle. The unknown male exited the vehicle with a pry bar in his hand and left the scene quickly toward Victoria. The male was described by the witness as 40-50 years old, approximately 6’4”, thin, with scruffy facial hair. The unknown male caused damage to the interior of the vehicle as well as to the ignition.
