Weekly Media Release for September 18 to 24, 2023

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 62 calls for service this week.

Road Rage
On September 18, 2023, at approximately 1:00am, there was a road rage incident on Cedar Hill Cross Rd at University Dr, in which two drivers exchanged obscene hand gestures. A 19-year-old male driver proceeded to throw McDonald’s garbage, including a sundae at the other vehicle. This incident was captured on the Tesla’s internal video recording system. After investigating the matter, the 19-year-old male was issued a Violation Ticket for Depositing Litter Section 204(2) MVA in the amount of $81. (OB2023-2854)

Theft
On September 18, 2023, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft from a business on Oak Bay Ave. A male described as Caucasian, approximately 40 years old, with a hunch, slim build wearing a black baseball cap, white shirt, green pants and a black backpack, entered the store and stole approximately $200 worth of merchandise. The matter is still under investigation. (OB2023-2856)

Impaired Driver
On September 23, 2023, at approximately 2:11am, the Oak Bay Police were in the area of Shelbourne St and Mortimer St on an unrelated call, when an officer observed a vehicle driving on Shelbourne St that appeared to be overloaded with passengers and did not have headlights on. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was a 20-year-old male with a Class 7 Novice driver’s licence. The driver indicated to police that he was the designated driver for 7 passengers (the vehicle only had seating for 4 passengers). The driver displayed indicia consistent with having consumed alcohol. The driver provided a breath sample and blew a “Fail” on an Approved Screening Device. The 20-year-old male was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days and a Violation Ticket for Driving Contrary to his restrictions Section 25(15) MVA in the amount of $109. Excessive Speed
On September 24, 2023, at approximately 10:26pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement in the area of Beach Dr and Newport Ave. A 20-year-old male was stopped for going 83 km/h in a 40km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed Section 148(1) MVA in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-2911)
