OB23-2691- Traffic

On Monday, September 4, 2023 at approximately 4:21pm, while on general uniformed patrol, members observed a motor vehicle travelling southbound on Beach Dr. near Bowker Ave. Investigation revealed an inactive status for insurance on the vehicle and as a result a traffic stop was initiated. The driver was suspected of drinking alcohol while driving and a roadside sobriety test was administered. The driver failed the screening device and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, 30-day vehicle impoundment and violation ticket for no insurance.

OB23-2673 – Traffic

On Thursday, September 7, 2023 at approximately 8:00 pm, while conducting general patrol in the area of Beach Drive and Beresford Street, a vehicle was located broken down in an active lane of traffic. Officers queried the vehicle and found it to have inactive insurance since 2021. A violation ticket was issued for no insurance and the vehicle was towed off the roadway.

OB23-2736 – Fraud

On Friday, September 8, 2023 at 8:09 am, OBPD was contacted regarding a fraudulent phone call. The complainant wished to report receiving phone calls from a person posing as RBC Security looking to verify their personal information and debit card numbers. Shortly after providing the information $2000 was found to have been transferred from their bank account. The Royal Bank was contacted in time and the fraudulent transaction was stopped.

The Oak Bay Police receive several reports a month regarding various types of fraud including online and over the phone. Residents are reminded that reputable banking services do not typically contact clients via the telephone to confirm banking information and that if ever in doubt they should attend their bank branch in person to verify any requests for information or account activity.

If you have information regarding these or any other crimes in Oak Bay, please phone the police department at 250-592-2424 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS)
