On January 12th Oak Bay Police responded to a report of an attempted Break and Enter at the MacLaurin Building at UVic on the first floor of the building where a variety of musical instruments were kept. No entry was made and no property was taken.
Also on January 12th Oak Bay Police received four reports of thefts from unlocked cars, three on Thorpe Place and one from Lincoln Road. Small amounts of change were taken from three of the cars each and the fourth had $800 worth of various items stolen. Police continue to strongly encourage citizens to remove all items from the interior of their vehicles and to lock your car when unoccupied.
On January 13th Oak Bay Police received a report that two men claiming to be from Vancouver, had made $1500.00 worth of gift card purchases at Starbucks on Oak Bay Ave using prepaid Visas and Mastercards, many of which were declined. On January 12th, West Shore RCMP arrested two men from the lower mainland for fraud, having used this same M.O. in Duncan and Langford. The two men in the West Shore arrest match the description of the suspects in the Oak Bay incident. Oak Bay Police continue their investigation.
On January 13th Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a Break and Enter to a shed behind an apartment building on Foul Bay Road. A male was observed by one of the residents lifting the shed door up. This male grabbed a piece of equipment and left quickly, meeting up with a second male. The witness went to notify her husband and upon return, the two males were already gone. Stolen was a Husqvarna 145 BT orange and gray leaf blower. The lock to the shed had been cut. No known suspects at this time.
On January 15th a citizen advised Oak Bay Police that he had received an email claiming to be from Revenue Canada stating he had a refund coming. He clicked the links and provided his full name, date of birth and Social Insurance Number. He then received a second email asking for further information including banking information. The citizen then called Revenue Canada and learned this was a fraudulent scam. Police advise to always be wary of any request for information such as Social Insurance Numbers or banking information, without first being sure of the legitimacy of such a request.
On January 16th at approximately 11:05pm Oak Bay Police were conducting an impaired driving check stop on Beach Drive by Mount Joy Avenue when a truck was observed approaching at a high rate of speed and almost failing to stop for the check point. The driver was a Novice driver with a class 7 licence and had the odour of liquor and marihuana on his breath. Roadside screening tests were taken resulting in the driver being issued an Immediate 90 day Roadside Driving Prohibition. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The 19 year old male driver was also issued with a Violation ticket for driving with too many passengers in contravention of his licencing requirements as well as for speeding.
On January 17th at approximately 2:30am Oak Bay Police pulled over a motor vehicle on Oak Bay Avenue and a subsequent investigation revealed the 35 year old Victoria male driver had been consuming alcohol. A roadside screening test was administered resulting in an Immediate 3 day Roadside Driving Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 3 days.
