Weekly Media Release Jan. 18 – Jan. 24, 2021

January 18th: Report of a custom made address sign stolen in the 2600 block of Cotswold Rd. The complainant also reported that his neighbour’s address sign was also stolen (OBPD file 2021-156). It is believed that this occurred in the early morning of January 16th at which time the OBPD responded to the same area for banging by three unknown persons and located a mailbox on its side with a storm drain on top of it (OBPD file 2021-132). Area patrols for the three unknowns were negative.

January 19th: A complainant reported the fraudulent use of his credit card totaling over six hundred dollars. The complainant was in possession of his credit card which he cancelled immediately. As, unfortunately, a suspect does not have to have your physical credit card in hand to make a fraudulent transaction, please check your credit card statements regularly to make sure you have not been the victim of fraud (OBPD file 2021-164).

January 23rd: a cyclist was hit near the turn off point for Cattle Point shortly after three o’clock in the afternoon. The collision occurred between a beige van with a BC license plate and a cyclist. The driver of the van, described as being over 70 yrs of age, stopped after the collision and spoke with a second cyclist at the scene but then left the scene without providing his information. The injured cyclist was taken to the hospital and was later released. The injured cyclist sustained possible stress fractures, scrapes to his face, abrasions, and bruising on his leg. The OBPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed this collision or with any information in relation to this incident to contact the Oak Bay Police at 250-592-2424 (OBPD file 2021-200).

If you are involved in a collision please remember to do the following:
1) Exchange information with others involved in the collision. Obtain and exchange the following information: driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, makes and models of vehicles, names and contact information of those involved.
2) Contact the police if there are any injuries and/or the damage total is over $10,000
3) Take photographs of the scene (if police don’t attend)
4) Obtain contact information of witnesses if there are any (if police don’t attend)
5) Make a report to ICBC regardless of whose fault the crash was. The ICBC Dial-a-

January 24th: A male walked into the Cork and Barrel Spirit Merchants just after 9 pm and stole a bottle of Tequila worth $140. The male described as: 55 yrs, medium build, grey hair, grey vest, brown checkered jacket, blue jeans, black gloves, black shoes, and black bandana on his head left the area on a bicycle. Area patrols for the male were negative (OBPD file 2021-205).

Our very own Cst Fidler received his pin this past week for making Alexa’s Team last year. Alexa’s Team pays tribute to RCMP and municipal police officers who make extraordinary contributions to reducing the number of impaired drivers by alcohol or drugs. Alexa Middelaer was a four-year old girl who was killed by an impaired driver in Delta, BC in 2008.
