Weekly Media Release Jan. 6 to Jan. 12, 2020

On January 6th, police received a report of food tampering. The complainant advised they bought items for a salad from a Victoria grocery store, and when they mixed the items, they found a sewing needle. The store was notified and immediately removed the items from shelves. The investigation in on-going (file 2020-84 refers).

On January 8th, police attended the University of Victoria for a report of Assault Cause Bodily Harm. Police interviewed the 21 year old male victim, who stated he had been attacked from behind by a male he knew. Police were able to locate the 21 year old suspect and arrest him. He was released on a no-contact condition with the victim. Charges of Assault Cause Bodily Harm and Utter Threats are being recommended. As the two involved parties knew each other, this incident is not a reflection of campus safety as it continues to be a very safe place (file 2020-103 refers).

On January 10th at approximately 2:15 AM police attended to the 1300 block of Beach Drive for a single vehicle crash. On arrival, police found a vehicle up against some trees at the edge of the ocean at Queens Park. The vehicle narrowly missed several large trees and was only prevented from ending up in the ocean by some smaller trees. The 19 year old driver was believed to be under the influence of drugs. He was transported to hospital. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition along with documents related to a blood warrant. The matter is still under investigation (file 2020-118 refers).

On January 10th, police responded to the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Brighton Street for a Pedestrian Struck Motor Vehicle Incident. A motor vehicle being driven by an elderly female was turning left onto southbound Victoria Avenue. A pedestrian crossing Victoria Avenue eastbound was struck by the driver’s mirror and knocked to the ground. The pedestrian sustained a cut to her eyebrow and a broken collarbone and has since been released. The driver was shaken up. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital. The matter is still under investigation.

On January 11th, police responded to a male rolling around on the floor of a bank in the lobby. Police located the male, who was carrying two bags of tools. Police seized the tools, which were later determined to be stolen. The matter is still under investigation (files 2020-131 & 2020-148 refer).

On January 11th, Oak Bay Police responded to a business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave where a flower planter had been thrown through a glass door at the rear of the building (file 2020-132 refers).
