Weekly Media Release January 17-23, 2017

On January 17th at 1:30am a citizen reported a male wearing a red ball cap trying to kick in the front door of the Oak Bay Gold, Silver & Coin Shop on Oak Bay Avenue.  Police attended and found the glass to the front door had been smashed.  Video surveillance showed a male approx. 5’8” tall wearing a beige coat, black pants and carrying a skateboard as being responsible.  Two old computers of little value were reported stolen.  Police canine services from Saanich attended but a successful track was not realized.  Police are continuing their investigation.

On January 17th police received a report of a theft of a self-propelled lawn mower from an unlocked shed behind a residence on Westdowne Rd.  The theft may have occurred anytime in the past three weeks.   Police recommend that residents ensure sheds have locks engaged to prevent thieves from accessing property.

On January 19th at 1:08 am police were conducting an impaired driving roadblock on Cadboro Bay Road when an approaching vehicle tried to drive through without stopping.  Police successfully stopped the vehicle which was being operated by a 20 yr old Langford citizen.   There were three passengers in the vehicle in addition to the driver.  Police noted the driver displayed signs of impairment including poor coordination, drowsiness, and the odour of liquor on her breath.  A demand for a roadside breath sample was made and a FAIL reading obtained.   The driver was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her motor vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

On January 19th at 10:00 pm police were conducting an impaired driving roadblock on Beach Drive when an approaching vehicle made a sudden and abrupt turn to avoid the roadblock.  Police stopped the vehicle which was being driven by a 69 yr old Oak Bay resident.  Police noted the driver had difficulty with balance and an odour of liquor on his breath.  A demand for a roadside breath sample was made and a FAIL reading obtained.  The driver was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his motor vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

On January 21st police received four reports of vehicles being entered overnight.  These occurred on Monterey Ave, Bying St., Oliver St, and Hampshire Rd.   Articles such as bottles, identification, house keys, and money were stolen.   As we always do, police continue to remind residents to leave nothing inside a motor vehicle and to always lock their vehicle when unattended.
