Weekly Media Release January 24 – 30, 2022

On January 23rd, just after 0300 hrs, a taxi driver called the OBPD to report a fare fraud of just under $50. The female occupant exited the taxi advising that she was going to go get money. Instead she left the area and did not return to pay for her fare. The female was described as caucasian, 25 yrs old, 5’6”, slim build, black hair, nose ring, wearing a pink coat and cream coloured pants. Police conducted area patrols for the female but were not able to locate her. File is still under investigation. (OBPD file 2022-231)

On January 26th, just after 6pm, the OBPD assisted the Oak Bay Fire Department at a house fire on Tod Rd. The fire was contained to the basement. No neighbouring residences were affected. Everyone who had been in the house at the time of the fire was able to get out without injury. The Fire Department remained on site throughout the night to monitor the residence. On January 28th a building manager reported that an unknown male broke into his apartment building just before 6am, in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The male accessed the building via the entrance and proceeded to jimmy mailboxes open and steal mail. He then proceeded down the hallway and unlocked different storage and utility rooms. The male is described as: caucasian, 20-30 yrs of age, 5’8” to 6′, stocky build wearing a khaki parka with fur lined hood, blue jeans, white sneakers with black laces, white olive coloured backpack with orange on the top and straps. Prior to leaving the building the male attempted to steal a scooter but was unsuccessful. As a result, the scooter’s ignition was damaged. In total, the male stole a blender and a bag containing unknown items. (OBPD file 2022-277)

On January 29th, just after 1am, a taxi driver reported a cyclist had run into the back of his parked taxi in the 2000 block of Cedar Hill X Rd. The cyclist fell to the ground but got up and rode away Westbound on Cedar Hill X Rd without providing his information. The taxi driver believed that the cyclist was intoxicated. The taxi driver was legally parked at the time of the collision. The taxi obtained damage to the driver’s side rear corner which included a broken tail light assembly and impact marks on the body work and paint. The taxi driver did not sustain any injuries. The cyclist was described as male, medium build, 40-50 yrs of age, jeans, and a blue jacket. Police conducted area patrols but were not able to locate the cyclist. (OBPD file 2022-283)

On January 29th at 0715 hrs an OBPD member was conducting traffic enforcement near Foul Bay Rd and Carnarvon St. A traffic stop was conducted with a vehicle that was going just over 30 km/h over the speed limit. The 39 yr old male driver was issued a notice of driving prohibition section 93(1)(a)(II) and a violation ticket for speeding in a municipality. (OBPD file 2022-284)

On January 29th a complainant, reported that they had noticed that their vehicle’s driver side mirror had been smashed overnight. The vehicle was parked in the 100 block of Beach Dr. The attending officer conducted patrols to see if there were other damaged vehicles. One other vehicle, located in the same hundred block of Beach Dr, had received damage to its driver side mirror. There are no leads to identify a suspect. (OBPD file 2022-286)

On January 30th at 8pm a 42 yr old male was located passed out in his vehicle in the 2500 block of Cadboro Bay Rd. A report had been made to police that the male had been in his vehicle for 30 minutes and that the vehicle had its lights on. The male eventually woke up and police conducted an impaired investigation. The investigation resulted in the male being found to be impaired. His driver’s license was seized and he was issued numerous documents including a future court date. (OBPD file 2022-293)

This past week our school liaison officer issued five violation tickets and six warnings to drivers in school zones. She also had fun presenting to a grade 1 class, at a local school, the different tools that police officers use.

The Oak Bay Police Department would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Chinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year. This year marks the Year of the Tiger. People born in years of the Tiger are characterized as ambitious, courageous, enthusiastic, generous, and self-confident with a sense of justice and commitment to help others for the greater good.
