Weekly Media Release June 18, 2012

Week of June 11th to June 17th, 2012

During the past week the Oak Bay Police Department responded to 69 calls for service.

There were seven theft from vehicles reported over the week which occurred throughout the Municipality. On June 12th, 2012 members of the Oak Bay Police Department recovered property that was stolen from a number of these vehicles and the property has been returned. Additional property remains and if anyone has had their vehicle entered they can contact the Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424 to determine if we have recovered their belongings. The investigation is ongoing.

There have been recent amendments to the Liquor Control and Licensing Act which deal with providing liquor to a minor and possessing liquor in an open container while in a public place. The changes allow police officers to issue violation tickets for offences instead of a court appearance notice. The fine for providing liquor to a minor is $575 and the fine for possessing liquor in an open container is $230.

As of June 15, 2012 police will again have the option to issue an Immediate Roadside Suspension to any driver who blows a “fail”, using an approved screening device (ASD), as an alternative to the full Criminal Code process. One of the changes that has been implemented is if the driver blows either a “warn” or a “fail” then police must advise drivers of their right to a second test on a second ASD and police must tell the driver that the lower of the two readings will prevail.
