On Sunday November 4, 2013, a 50 year old man was kayaking near Discovery Island, when his kayak capsized, leaving him stranded in the water for more than three hours. Luckily he was rescued by efforts from the Oak Bay Sea Rescue, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue and the Canadian Coast Guard. The Oak Bay Police are recommending that all boaters carry such emergency preparedness equipment as flares, whistles, sounding devices, a working cell-phone, bailers and lifejackets. It should also be noted that the waters in and around Oak Bay are routinely patrolled by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police often accompanied by members of the Oak Bay Police conducting Marine compliance checks.
On Sunday November 4th, between 8 and 11 pm an unlocked residence was entered in the 900 block of Monterey Avenue, in Oak Bay, likely with residents home. The culprits then removed a sum of cash from the home-owner’s purse. The Oak Bay Police are urging the public to be mindful of residential and personal security, especially during the upcoming holiday season.
Also on Sunday November 4th, at 10 am, a concerned citizen reported a suspicious looking motorcycle parked in the 2700 block of Heron St. in Oak Bay. Upon attending the Oak Bay Police determined that it was abandoned after being stolen in Victoria, on October 30th. In this case the bike’s keys had been misplaced several days before the theft of the bike.
On Friday November 8th, mid-morning, a back-pack containing personal effects was stolen from an insecure locker at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. Again, police are urging the public to be responsible with their personal effects.
