British Columbia’s gun amnesty program runs from October 1st to October 31st. Police departments across the province participate in this initiative which aims to get unwanted guns turned into the police and disposed of properly.
Anyone wanting to get rid of an unwanted registered or unregistered gun may do so this month without any fear of prosecution so long as the weapon has not been used in a criminal offense. So far this month, the Oak Bay police have collected two pistols, three rifles and dozens of rounds of ammunition from local residents.
Some of the guns received are family heirlooms while others have simply been unused and no longer wanted. People have a variety of reasons for turning in these weapons but generally, the amnesty provides for a sure way to ensure that your gun will never fall into the wrong hands.
To have a member of the OBPD attend for your unwanted weapon, please contact the department and an officer will come to you. Police ask that you do not show up at the station with a weapon of any sort, on your person or even in a vehicle.
With Hallowe’en fast approaching, the Oak Bay Police Department would like to remind all to take extra precautions to ensure their safety. It’s getting dark earlier and the weather has been blustery so please remember to wear bright, reflective clothing. If you’ll be dressing up for Hallowe’en, remember that make-up allows for a better field of vision than a mask and try to avoid loose fitting or long costumes that could be a hazard. The Internet is full of sites dedicated to safety tips and precautions should you desire a refresher.
Members of the Oak Bay Police Department will be on Oak Bay Avenue during the afternoon of Halloween to take part in the annual Trick or Treat sponsored by the Business Improvement Association. The Avenue will be shut down do traffic between Monterey and Wilmot for the duration of the event and will offer a safe and fun environment for goblins of all ages to enjoy. The fun on the Avenue will be followed up with the massive bonfire in the parking lot behind the police station where you’ll also find hot dogs, hot chocolate and a costume parade. Come join us!
On Tuesday, October 18th, a very honest Oak Bay resident attended the station with a substantial amount of cash that he had found lying on the ground earlier in the week. The money is rather unique and the OBPD would love to get it back to its rightful owner. Of course, it will be expected that the owner of the cash would be able to give specific details about the money in question and would likely have an idea as to the location it was found in.
