Weekly Media Release Sept 22-28, 2014

On September 23, 2014 police initiated a theft and fraud investigation where an Oak Bay resident was defrauded of $780.00. Blank cheques belonging to the resident were stolen from their vehicle and these cheques were subsequently filled out and cashed. Police have identified possible suspects and the investigation is ongoing.

On September 25th, 2014 police responded to a break and enter at the Visual Arts Building at the University of Victoria. Police discovered eight rooms had been forced open with the door handles being damaged. The suspect(s) attempted to steal a welder and torch but were unsuccessful. It appears nothing was removed from the premises. No suspects have been identified at this point.

On September 27th, 2014 police responded to a report of a hit and run accident. Two vehicles that were parked overnight on Transit Rd had been side-swiped by an unknown third vehicle. One vehicle suffered a broken outside mirror while the second vehicle suffered damage along the full length of the driver’s side. There was a transfer of red paint from the offending vehicle suggesting the offending vehicle was at least partially red in colour. No suspect vehicle has been located at this point.

Police have noticed an increase of noisy house parties in the past few weeks, particularly on weekends. A majority of these parties have been by university students in rental properties. Police advise that if a complaint is received and the household occupants are cooperative in stopping or reducing the noise to an acceptable level, a warning will usually be issued in the first instance. If the police have to re-attend or if the residence has had previous noise complaints in the recent past, police may issue a noise violation by-law ticket in the amount of $100.00. Police encourage all persons hosting a party to be mindful of the noise and respectful of the rights of their neighbours. Remember, what may be acceptable noise at 2:00 in the afternoon, is not acceptable at 2:00 in the morning at which time noise carries so much more noticeably due to the general quietness of the evening or early morning.
